San Francisco 49ers the next NFL franchise to buy into Premier League?

Co-chairman and former owner of the San Francisco 49ers, John York, has been speaking to the British media about the 49ers upcoming game at Wembley Stadium.

San Francisco will play the Jacksonville Jaguars on October 27 in London and York?s primary reason for visiting the UK was to talk about the upcoming game.

He suggested there?s strong potential for an NFL franchise based in London in the future, and a few interesting soccer tidbits came from Mr. York?s interview too.

First of all, he was asked about the recent influx of American owners in the Premier League and if San Francisco would ever consider buying a PL team.

?I don?t know that we would not,? York said. And the former owner, whose son Jed is now the 49ers Team President and Owner, said no deals have been initiated. ?We have not done so thus far, but it could be an interesting opportunity.?

(MORE: A quick look back at why Fulham FC have long been known as ?Fulhamerica?)

So, in true PR style, York somewhat dodged the question. But he did go on to explain that owning a Premier League franchise is an extremely viable opportunity and didn?t rule it out.

?I think it depends on the individuals and the opportunities that exist. I?m sure that there will be other people [NFL owners] interested in the Premier League franchises if they are ever available,? York said. ?There are tremendous opportunities, it is a great sport and has a broader attention than American Football does outside of the United States.?

However any potential 49ers owned Premier League side will have to go on the back burner right now, as the co-chairman insisted that all of San Francisco?s focus is on opening their new $1.2 billion stadium in Santa Clara.

And he also had some words on new Fulham owner Shahid Khan too. ?He?s an interesting person,? York said. ?He?s got a lot of enthusiasm, he?s been a hardworking man throughout his life and has made a small fortune in his own business. He loves sport and he is new to the NFL as well as being new to football in the UK. ?

(MORE: Shahid Khan is American, bought Fulham, probably not the end of English soccer)

As York was non-committal on San Francisco buying a Premier League franchise, his positive words on the league and the pluses behind owning a PL team were numerous and it seems as though the NFL owners and American businessmen are increasingly looking to England?s top tier for investment opportunities. Six American owners and counting.

Whether that?s a good or bad thing remains to be seen. But as the money continues to pour in from all over the globe, expected plenty more NFL owners to be answering more questions like this in the future.

Manning's disclosures imperiled U.S. troops, ex-general says

FT. MEADE, Md. ? A former top Army officer who oversaw the Pentagon's secret intelligence gathering testified Wednesday that Pfc. Bradley Manning's disclosures to WikiLeaks "affected our ability to do our mission" and endangered U.S. ground troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Retired Army Brig. Gen. Robert A. Carr, formerly at the Defense Intelligence Agency and now an executive at Northrop Grumman, was the government's first witness in the sentencing phase of Manning's court-martial. Military prosecutors hope to win a maximum prison term of 136 years for the 25-year-old soldier.

Manning was convicted Tuesday of violating the Espionage Act but acquitted of the more serious charge: aiding the enemy by making the material available to Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups.

Carr said the U.S. military was stunned to discover that so much material had been given to the anti-secrecy website. The disclosures comprised more than 700,000 documents, including combat strategies, State Department cables and terrorism detainee assessments.

"There was nothing about [the] WikiLeaks [situation] that was normal," said Carr, who spent much of his 31-year military career directing Army intelligence-gathering operations.

Releasing so much classified material, he said, put countless people at risk. "It's a nasty world," Carr said. "In some cases, lives will be harmed." But Carr did not specify anyone who was harmed by Manning's disclosures.

Carr said sources of information dried up and "quit talking to us as a result of the releases."

He said some countries began registering complaints after reading the detainee assessments for terrorism suspects held at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. At the time, Carr said, "we were trying to move people out of Gitmo," and the compromised records stalled negotiations with foreign countries.

In addition, he said, U.S. supply lines were compromised because details of military logistics were divulged and secret surveys of local communities in Afghanistan were jeopardized.

Carr left the Army in 2011 after running the Pentagon's equivalent of the CIA. He previously oversaw intelligence-gathering efforts during the Persian Gulf War and in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

When the Pentagon learned in 2010 of the magnitude of the disclosures, Carr said, the secretary of Defense formed an Intelligence Review Task Force with Carr as its head to assess soldier safety, national security and foreign alliances. Often Carr reported directly to the Defense secretary, updating him each day on how badly the breach was affecting the war effort.

"These were our documents that we had in our possession securely for a long period of time, and now all of a sudden this massive amount of material is available to the public and our adversaries," Carr said.

"One thing that hit us in the face," he said, was 400,000 pages of Iraq logs that detailed the U.S. force structure there. Other material gave specifics about U.S. battlefield injuries, down to "how they lost a limb or how they might have died."

From detainee assessments on Guantanamo Bay, Carr said, Al Qaeda learned for the first time how individual detainees were captured, interrogated and imprisoned.

"These are pretty dangerous people who have a number of dangerous allies and friends they are working with who are sworn to do us harm," the retired general said. "Up until the release of this material, the adversary had no idea how much data we had on them."

Another government witness, John Kirchhofer, deputy chief financial officer at the DIA who worked under Carr at the task force, described meeting with angry NATO partners in Europe the week that WikiLeaks posted classified material about the war in Iraq.

"There were some unpleasant comments directed at me and some accusations directed at the U.S.," he said. "They were aggressive. People got chesty."

With Moto X, Google Android is about to have its iPhone moment

Google?s original vision of expanding mobile web access through Android is certainly working but it?s about to get even more successful. Why should it have thousands of different Android models from hardware partners when Google owns a handset maker in Motorola? A single model for the masses can boost both Android adoption and usage: The Moto X phone now looks to be that device.

Motorola Moto X adThe Moto X handset is expected to arrive?on Thursday, ending what may be the worst kept Motorola secret to date. Amid weeks of leaked information and images, we have a pretty good idea of what the phone will look like. And on paper, it hasn?t sounded too innovative, leading me to think that Google?s strategy for the Moto X isn?t very clear.

After seeing the latest Moto Droid phones last week, however, I?ve been rethinking my viewpoint: Just as the iPhone appeals to the masses, Moto X will be Google?s Android phone for the average person. If I?m right, Moto X will give Android its own iPhone moment of sorts.

When can you get the phone?

Apple does many things right with its iPhone and not all of them are about the device itself. Aside from great marketing, Apple often launches new iPhone models after it has already ramped up production for them, thanks to its mastery of the supply chain and forward-thinking component deals signed years ago. That means you can often order or even get your hands on the newest device immediately after the handset is introduced. I can?t think of many times in the Android world that?s been the case.

Moto X covers

I?m anticipating that Motorola will quickly make the Moto X available to interested buyers; perhaps even this week. Motorola has been touting that the phone is being made in the U.S. ? manufacturing is taking place in an old Nokia factory in Texas ? so it should be able to deliver the product quickly. Even more so if it has already begun producing the device. It?s likely you can customize one with a colored back plate or engraving but that won?t take long if the base handsets are sitting in Texas, ready to ship.

You won?t be limited by your carrier choice

Evidence suggests that like the iPhone, all four of the major U.S. carriers will support the Moto X handset. That also includes U.S. Cellular and Ting, the MVNO that works with Sprint?s network. If the handset is available for the big four, it should also find its way to other MVNOs since they all use networks from the same carrier. In that case, you could always buy the phone and bring it a pre-paid carrier.

If that?s true, the Moto X will have the same widespread availability as Apple?s iPhone. Perhaps even more so as the iPhone isn?t supported on every MVNO network today. This means the terrible situation of wanting a particular phone but having to wait and see when ? or if ? your carrier will offer it won?t apply to the Moto X.

One size fits all when it comes to accessories

A frustrating aspect of Android as a whole is a lack of accessories. Sure, each manufacturer typically offers their own cases, docks and such, but with nearly 12,000 different Android handset models in the wild, universal accessories aren?t possible. With just a few iPhone models using standard connectors in the same place on the hardware, you have a nearly limitless amount of accessory choices.

Moto X could offer the same; something Google hasn?t even been able to do with its Nexus line of phones. With the same model Moto X available on every carrier and then some, a standard line of accessories could be made available. And Motorola has years of experience in that regard: It has offered batteries, headsets, cases, docks and more for its phone lineup. In fact, at last week?s Motorola Droid Ultra event, the company was showing off nearly a half a dozen such accessories, ranging from cases to wireless speakers with NFC pairing capabilities.

Nexus is still around, but Moto X is Google?s bigger play

Originally, the Nexus line of phones was meant to show handset makers how to push the envelope both with hardware and software. But that?s changed now. On its own, Google can?t compete with the high-end flagships designed by Samsung, HTC, LG and others. How can it when those same companies design and build the Nexus devices? That?s where Motorola comes in.

Nexus 4 in hand

Now that it owns a hardware company, Google can push forward its own vision of an Android handset. And it can do so without competing directly against the flagship phones of its hardware partners. By limiting the Moto X to mid-range components, its more of an indirect competition against the Galaxy S 4 or HTC One.

Mid-range hardware may not mean mid-range performance and features

As much as Apple has pushed its iPhone hardware forward, it hasn?t always been cutting edge. Think back to the original handset with its 2G connection, for example. Or the ?retina display? screen that doesn?t offer full HD video support in its native resolution. Obviously, things like this haven?t hurt iPhone sales: People still want the phone because it can do nearly everything they want or need it to do. Ultimately, smartphones aren?t just about hardware.

That will be evident with the new Moto X assuming the leaked specifications are accurate. Nope, it won?t have a full HD screen; expect a 720p display. It?s not going to use Qualcomm?s fastest smartphone chip like some upcoming devices will; look for a Motorola-optimized product based on last year?s Qualcomm Snapdragon. Here?s the thing: It will likely perform adequately or better for most people.

New Droid Ultra

I?m basing that thought on the little bit of time I spent with the Droid Ultra lineup. These phones too had 720p displays, but you could have fooled me: They looked super crisp to my eyes which thought they were seeing a 1080p screen. Using 2 GB of memory with the Motorola X8 chip ? again: an optimized Snapdragon ? kept the handsets moving along very quickly. And the 10 megapixel camera sensors appeared to provide reasonably good images and video.

Moto X will have the best of Android at a reasonable price

So what if Moto X offers decent performance: Don?t many Android phones do that? Sure they do, but I can think of two initial differences that will broaden interest in the Moto X: Price and features.

Given the expected hardware in the Moto X, this isn?t a phone that?s likely going to retail for $600 or more at full price. Instead, I think we?re looking at $300 or so. That means you?d be able to purchase one without contract for a reasonable cost or you can buy one with a carrier contract for perhaps nothing. Even If the full price is $400, which sounds high to me, a subsidized cost would still be $99 or less. With that kind of pricing you can advertise Moto X as affordable for anyone in the U.S.

But you?re not getting just a cheap Android phone. You?ll get a solid performer with the latest version of Android and then some. I?m talking about how the phone will take better advantage of its sensors so it can take automatic action in certain instances. Think of the light sensor that tells the phone its in your pocket so perhaps the ringer volume is automatically adjusted up. Or the ?always on? microphone and natural language processor that listens for your commands: We saw this in the Droid Ultras and it brings an advanced Google Glass-like interface experience to a mid-range device.

Will Moto X be the Android for everyone?

I can?t yet say how much success the Moto X will see; I?ll have more thoughts on that after I attend the Moto X event. But I can say that the strategy is now much clearer to me than it was last month. When Motorola called the device a ?flagship? phone, I was scratching my head. Nothing about it screamed ?flagship? to me; at least not on paper.

Often, however, a product is better than the sum total of its individual parts. Apple?s iPhone is a perfect example of that. And if the Moto X is what I think it is, it may be a shining second example as the de-facto Android phone that Google wants in every hand. That brings us back to the original intent of Android: A defensive play against the iPhone to reap user information and boost Google revenues though mobile ads.

AP Source: Pistons acquire PG Jennings from Bucks

(AP) ? A person familiar with the deal tells The Associated Press that the Detroit Pistons have acquired point guard Brandon Jennings from the Milwaukee Bucks for point guard Brandon Knight and two prospects.

The person, who spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity because the trade hasn't been announced, says Jennings has agreed to a $24 million, three-year contract with the Pistons. The person says Detroit will also give up seldom-used center Viacheslav Kravtsov and forward Khris Middleton in the trade.

Detroit has been active this offseason ? signing free agents Josh Smith, Chauncey Billups and Luigi Datome ? as it desperately tries to end its four-year postseason drought.

The Pistons signed Billups to mentor Knight, but have chosen to replace him with Jennings.

U.S. military judge to hear arguments in Manning sentencing

FORT MEADE, Maryland | Wed Jul 31, 2013 10:18am BST

FORT MEADE, Maryland (Reuters) - The trial of Bradley Manning, the U.S. soldier found guilty on 19 counts of handing over classified data to WikiLeaks, is scheduled to move into the sentencing phase on Wednesday.

Manning, 25, escaped a life sentence with no parole when Colonel Denise Lind acquitted him of aiding the enemy, the most serious of 21 criminal counts brought against him in the court-martial. He still faces the possibility of 136 years in prison on the other counts.

The slightly built Army private first class was working as a low-level intelligence analyst in Baghdad in 2010 when he was arrested and charged in the biggest leak of classified information in U.S. history.

In a court martial that stretched over two months, military prosecutors argued that Manning became a "traitor" to his country when he handed over to the anti-secrecy website a trove of 700,000 battlefield videos, diplomatic cables and other classified files.

On Wednesday, prosecutors and defence attorneys will call witnesses to address Manning's motives and the effects of his actions.

The U.S. government charged that the breach put national security at risk. It also thrust WikiLeaks and its founder Julian Assange into the international spotlight.

Defence attorneys portrayed Manning as well-intentioned but naive in believing the documents could spark a broader debate in the United States about its overseas operations.

Observers said the verdict could have "a chilling effect" on WikiLeaks by making potential sources of documents in the United States more wary about handing over secret information.

It could also encourage the United States to seek to prosecute Assange for his role in publishing the information.

Assange has been living in the Ecuadorean embassy in London for over a year to avoid extradition to Sweden, where two women have accused him of sexual assault. The activist has expressed fears that Sweden might hand him to U.S. authorities.

Army prosecutors contended during Manning's court-martial that U.S. security was harmed when WikiLeaks published videos of a 2007 attack by an American Apache helicopter gunship in Baghdad that killed a dozen people, including two Reuters news staff, diplomatic cables, and secret details on prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay.

Manning supporters gathered at Fort Meade on Tuesday said they were relieved he had been acquitted of the most serious charge, but thought the sentence he could face was excessive.

"The remaining charges against him are still tantamount to life in prison," said Nathan Fuller. "That's still an outrage."

The verdict was praised by two U.S. Congressmen - Representatives Michael Rogers, a Republican who chairs the House intelligence committee and Democrat Dutch Ruppersberger, its ranking member.

"Justice has been served today. PFC Manning harmed our national security, violated the public's trust, and now stands convicted of multiple serious crimes," they said in a statement.

Oil falls as worries about China economy, stock index tumble in Japan weigh on energy trading

BANGKOK ? The price of oil fell to near $104 a barrel Monday, taking a negative cue from a sharp drop in the Nikkei stock index.

West Texas Intermediate, the benchmark for U.S. crude, was down 44 cents to $104.26 per barrel at midday Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 79 cents to close at $104.70 on Friday in New York.

Tetsu Emori, commodity markets fund manager at ASTMAZ Futures in Tokyo, said the weak performance of Japan's stock market spilled over into energy trading. The benchmark Nikkei 225 index dropped 2.5 percent, weighed down by a strengthening yen and worries about China's economy.

"The Japanese market is down very sharply," he said. "That may be some of the reason" for crude's decline.

Traders are also waiting to see whether the U.S. central bank will announce any alteration to its loose monetary policy. The Fed has been nudging the U.S. economy by buying massive amounts of government bonds, which has pushed borrowing rates sharply lower. But the program is widely expected to be scaled down later this year as the economy improves.

Oil prices declined last week after China, a major energy consumer, decided to press ahead with painful economic restructuring and forgo another round of stimulus even though growth has slowed.

The price of oil broke above $100 on July 3 for the first time since May 2012, mostly due to falling U.S. crude stockpiles and increased interest from financial investors.

In other trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange:

? Wholesale gasoline was down 0.3 cent at $3.00 a gallon.

? Heating oil was nearly unchanged at $3.015 a gallon.

? Natural gas shed 7.3 cents to $3.482 per 1,000 cubic feet.
