Weiss takes unusual coaching path to majors

Spencer Green, File)

(AP) ? A few of his high school players sauntered out to the diamond on a balmy Thursday afternoon, congregating near the infield grass that's beginning to turn brown.

A day after hearing the news that Walt Weiss, their coach at Regis Jesuit, was heading back to the big leagues as manager of the Colorado Rockies, they were still a little stunned. That was their coach, the one who just six months ago was taking grounders with them in practice ? on this field ? as he guided the team to the state semifinals.

Now, Weiss is making the unusual leap from high school coach to major league manager.

His players are already imagining the possibilities. Maybe Weiss will give them a tour of the clubhouse, or perhaps invite them to watch batting practice at Coors Field.

They're certain of this much: He's the right fit to turn around a team that finished a franchise-worst 64-98 last season.

"The way he respects the game, he'll be a very successful coach," senior catcher Jake Leathers said. "He's going to get the program headed in the right direction."

Everywhere they looked around the field at Regis, there were little reminders of Weiss.

Over there, that's where Weiss hit a double into the right-center gap one day in practice, an effortless swing filled with so much power. He was just clowning around to loosen the mood before a big game.

It worked.

And over there, that's where he gave an impromptu tutorial on the proper way to handle the infield fly rule if you're on base.

A lesson that would come in handy later.

More than anything, though, his players will remember the little sayings Weiss used to utter before they took the field. Nothing earth shattering, just things like: "Play the game hard and play the game right" or, "Stay humble, because if you're not humble, the game will find a way to humble you."

Those axioms hit their mark.

"He knows how to play it right and teach it well," said junior pitcher David Peterson, who just so happened to unintentionally show up for school Thursday wearing a Rockies sweatshirt. "He'll take over the clubhouse and turn things around."

Peterson will miss listening to Weiss' stories in the dugout. The 48-year-old Weiss was full of tales, too, ones he accumulated by playing shortstop for parts of 14 seasons in the majors. He started with Oakland (1987-92), where he won the 1988 AL Rookie of the Year award, and also had stops in Florida (1993), Colorado (1994-97) and Atlanta (1998-2000).

"I liked picking his brain and seeing what his days in the bigs were like," Peterson said. "One story he told me was when he was with the A's and he was in a World Series game. He walked out on the field and just looked up at the whole crowd, in shock. It's what we all dream of and hearing what it's like was incredible."

Leathers has known Weiss for quite some time, having grown up with Weiss' son, Brody, who's in his senior year at the school. It was on the advice of Weiss that Leathers switched from third base to catcher.

"It's opened so many doors for me," said Leathers, who's now being recruited by colleges. "What he can see in you and how you play the game, it's unbelievable."

The Rockies are hoping Weiss can have that kind of impact on Rockies players not all that much older than his high school team. The Rockies boast a young nucleus, featuring youthful players such as 23-year-old infielder Josh Rutledge and 24-year-old righty Jhoulys Chacin.

Weiss' ability to relate to his players may be one of his biggest attributes.

"The game is the same from when you're 10 to 25," said junior pitcher and first baseman Reagan Todd, who's already committed to Arizona State. "Baseball is baseball. He will be able to teach.

"He's very patient and calm. But when comes to game time, he's intense."

Asked for any good Weiss stories, junior outfielder Brooks Urich just laughed. He will never forget Weiss taking infield with the team during practice.

"Not to say he's old or anything, but he was just so smooth and threw the ball around the infield like he was playing in the majors the day before," Urich said. "Just amazing."

Weiss and Arizona Diamondbacks coach Matt Williams were the finalists to replace manager Jim Tracy, who resigned Oct. 7 with one year and $1.4 million left on his contract. Rockies bench coach Tom Runnells and first baseman Jason Giambi also received interviews.

"It's a great hire," Urich said of Weiss. "Everyone has respect for coach Weiss. There's never a bad word said about him."

As for receiving any special perks at the ballpark now that his former coach is leading the Rockies, Leathers said that's hardly necessary.

"Just having him on my resume, being my coach, that's plenty," Leathers said.

Final 10-mile trek for space shuttle Atlantis

Space shuttle Atlantis rolls down Kennedy Parkway on its way to its new home at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, in Cape Canaveral, Fla. The spacecraft traveled 125,935,769 miles during 33 spaceflights, including 12 missions to the International Space Station. In this Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012 photo, shuttle technician Joe Walsh looks through a hatch of the space shuttle Atlantis at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla. Atlantis isn't going far to its retirement home at Kennedy Space Center's main tourist stop. But it might as well be a world away for the workers who spent decades doting on Atlantis and NASA's other shuttles. Those who agreed to stay until the end - and help with the shuttles' transition from round-the-world flying marvels to museum showpieces - now face unemployment just as so many of their colleagues did over the last few years. (AP Photo/Marcia Dunn)

(AP) ? Trailed by a solemn entourage of astronauts and shuttle workers, Atlantis began its slow journey to retirement Friday, the last space shuttle to fly in orbit and the last to leave NASA's nest.

Atlantis emerged just before dawn from the massive Vehicle Assembly Building and, riding atop 76-wheeled platform, began the 10-mile trek to the Kennedy Space Center's main tourist stop.

About 200 workers gathered in the early morning chill to see the space shuttle out in the open for the final time. They were joined by the four astronauts who closed out the shuttle program aboard Atlantis more than a year ago.

"My opinion is it looks better vertically," said Christopher Ferguson, the astronaut who commanded Atlantis' final flight in July 2011.

"It's a short trip. It's taking a day," he added. "It traveled a lot faster in its former life. But that's OK. ... it's got a new role."

Portions of Atlantis' final launch countdown boomed over loudspeakers as the shuttle paused in front of the Vehicle Assembly Building before hitting the road. Employees gathered in front of a long white banner that read, "We Made History," and below that the single word "Atlantis." They followed the spaceship for a block or two, then scattered as the shuttle transporter revved up to its maximum 2 mph. The convoy included a dozen trucks and vans, their lights blinking.

The fact that several hundred shuttle workers are about to lose their jobs, now that Atlantis is being turned over to the visitor complex, dampened the mood. Thousands already have been laid off.

"The untold story of the last couple years, the last missions that we flew, is the work force. I mean, the contractors knew that their numbers were going to go down ... and yet they kept doing their jobs," said NASA's Angie Brewer, who was once in charge of getting Atlantis ready for flight.

Some were too upset to even show up. Friday's event marked the true end to the 30-year shuttle program.

Seeing so many members of the shuttle team "helps soften the hard edge of seeing Atlantis go off to a museum," said astronaut Rex Walheim, part of the ship's final crew.

Atlantis made its way down broad industrial avenues, most of them off-limits to the public. So the trek did not replicate the narrow, stop-and-go turns Endeavour encountered last month while navigating downtown Los Angeles.

The mastermind behind Atlantis' slow march through Kennedy was sweating bullets nonetheless.

"It's only a priceless artifact driving 9.8 miles and it weighs 164,000 pounds," said Tim Macy, director of project development and construction for Kennedy's visitor complex operator, the company Delaware North.

"Other than that, no pressure at all," Macy said, laughing. "Only the eyes of the country and the world and everybody at NASA is watching us. But we don't feel any pressure." He paused. "Of course, we feel pressure!"

The relocation of Atlantis was plotted out for months, he noted last week, and experienced shuttle workers took part.

"It's not like it's Tim and his buddies out here loading this up," Macy said. "We're using the expertise of NASA."

The roundabout loop was to take the shuttle past Kennedy's headquarters building for a midmorning ceremony and then to a still-under-design industrial park for a few hours of public viewing in the afternoon. Tourist tickets ran as high as $90 apiece for a chance to see the spaceship up close.

Crews removed 120 light poles, 23 traffic signals and 56 traffic signs in order for Atlantis to squeeze by. One high-voltage power line also had to come down. Staff trimmed back some scrub pines, but there was none of the widespread tree-axing that occurred in Los Angeles.

Atlantis had to traverse just one noticeable incline, a highway ramp. The rest of the course is sea-level flat.

The grand entrance into Atlantis' new home, in the early evening, also was expected to be smooth going. One complete wall of the exhibit hall was kept off, carport-style, so the shuttle could roll right in. Construction will begin on the missing wall early next week.

Once safely inside, Atlantis will be plastic-wrapped for protection until the building is completed. The grand opening is set for July 2013.

Total exhibit cost: $100 million, a price borne by Delaware North.

Discovery, the oldest and most traveled space shuttle, was the first to leave the nest, zooming off to the Smithsonian in Virginia in April atop a modified jumbo jet. Endeavour, the baby of the fleet, headed west in September.

Here is a brief look at each of NASA's space shuttles in the order they flew, including the prototype Enterprise:

? Enterprise: Shuttle prototype used in jetliner-drop tests over Edwards Air Force Base in California in 1977, never flew in space. Originally on display at Smithsonian Institution hangar in Virginia, it was flown to New York City this past April and moved into the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in June.

? Columbia: Destroyed during descent on Feb. 1, 2003, after 28 missions stretching back to 1981. All seven astronauts were killed. The wreckage is stored in NASA's Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center, for research purposes.

? Challenger: Destroyed during launch on Jan. 28, 1986, after 10 missions stretching back to 1983. All seven astronauts were killed. Buried in a pair of abandoned missile silos at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

? Discovery: Moved to Smithsonian Institution hangar in Virginia in April after 39 missions stretching back to 1984.

? Atlantis: Being moved Friday to Kennedy Space Center Visitor Center after 33 missions stretching back to 1985.

? Endeavour: Flown to Los Angeles in September and moved into California Science Center in October after 25 missions stretching back to 1992. It was the replacement for space shuttle Challenger.

The Reference Frame: Steven Weinberg defends linear collider ...

A month ago, Steven Weinberg gave a talk in Arlington, Texas. This is the questions-and-answers part of the talk:

It's 28 minutes. At the end of the regular talk, he mentioned various indirect advantages from building a new linear collider etc. He makes a good joke when they prepare an award for his memorable talk: How did you know in advance that my talk would be memorable? I would be inclined to make exactly the same comment.

A person asked about new physics. Weinberg focused on the identity and detection of the dark matter particle. The same person and another one wanted to ask about string theory ? that's what people are really excited about. Weinberg said it's extraordinarily mathematically powerful and it hasn't been possible to compare its characteristic predictions with experiments.

He says that the International Space Station was allowed to go at the same time when the Superconducting Supercollider was cancelled ? even though it was 10 times more expensive and has produced no science. He strengthens the claim by saying that the astronauts have never produced any science. Of course, some people in the audience are stunned, others applaud. ;-)

The linear collider would measure the properties of the Higgs and all the things much more accurately. I have some doubts whether this information is worth $10 billion dollars, especially because it is somewhat likely (40%?) that they would exactly agree with the Standard Model, within the ILC precision. And if there were a disagreement, it would still fail to clarify where the disagreement comes from, what are actually the new particles and physical phenomena that are responsible for the deviation. Imagine that the ILC finds out that the diphoton decays of the Higgs boson are indeed 70% more frequent than the Standard Model says. Would we be fully excited and satisfied? Nope. It would only be a justification to build a collider that may actually find the new beasts that are responsible. So why wouldn't we build this collider immediately?

For those reasons, I would tend to think it's better to save a little bit more money and build a new SSC-like collider that exceeds the LHC by its superior brute force, by the energy.

Weinberg said that he was attracted to theoretical physics by reading popular books when he was at the high school. He also mentions that for a long time, he believed he had to know everything before he starts to do research, so he was reading lots of books. Then he learned better. Well, I still think that his previous "mistake" was very valuable because it gave us Weinberg who really did and does know everything about the particle physics and cosmology of his era.

Most of the time, nothing comes out of the research so it may be frustrating. Sometimes, something comes out. If you love it, do it, if you don't, then don't do it...

Tip Line Encourages Public Participation in the Fight Against GPS ...

Washington, D.C. ? The Federal Communications Commission?s Enforcement Bureau today launched a dedicated jammer tip line ? 1-855-55-NOJAM (or 1-855-556-6526) ? to make it easier for the public to report the use or sale of illegal GPS, cell phone or other signal jammers. It is against the law for consumers to use, import, advertise, sell or ship a GPS or cell jammer or any other type of device that blocks, jams or interferes with authorized communications, whether on private or public property.

The FCC asks people to call the toll-free Jammer Tip Line immediately if:

  • you are aware of the ongoing use of a cell, GPS, or other signal jammer;
  • your employer operates a jammer in your workplace;
  • you observe a jammer in operation at your school or college;
  • you observe an advertisement for a jammer at a local store; or
  • you observe a jammer being operated on your local bus, train or other mass transit system.

?We need consumers to be our eyes and ears. Jammers do not just weed out noisy or annoying conversations and disable unwanted GPS tracking, they can prevent 9-1-1 and other emergency phone calls from getting through in a time of need,? Michele Ellison, chief of the Enforcement Bureau, said.

Calls to the Jammer Tip Line will be handled by experienced Enforcement Bureau staff. Callers are encouraged to provide as much detail as possible, including the time and location of the incident, a description of the jamming device (if available), and the name and contact information of the individual or business using or selling the device.

While callers may remain anonymous, the bureau urges callers to provide a contact phone number in case additional information is needed. ?Every tip can make a difference,? Ellison said. ?While our agents are actively pursuing these violations online and on the street, you can help. We encourage concerned parents, commuters, employees, and anyone else with credible information to tip us off. Working together, we can stop the spread of illegal jammers.

For more information, Frequently Asked Questions about cell, GPS, and Wi-Fi jammers are available at www.fcc.gov/jammers, or email jammerinfo@fcc.gov.

Content Writing Blog ? Ideas for Blog Monetization

Blogging has gained a religious following among the digital population and has apparently become their new vocation. The potential of a blog is limitless if it has something useful and unique to say. You can also make a decent amount of money from blogging if you ?do it the right way. Below are listed some neat tricks which can help you to transform your blog into a rich income source.

1.?????? Place Ads: This is one of the most common ways to start generating revenue from your blog. You can sign up at Google Adsense or any other another network to get some ads placed at your blog. If your blog caters to a niche audience and has a decent following then you can also sell the ad space of your blog at business forums, online communities and other groups.?

2.?????? Go Affiliate: Affiliate marketing can generate a fat stream of revenue from sale commissions. You can put up links of products and services that are relevant to your blog. There are various affiliate network programs which you can opt for such as Amazon, LinkShare, Commission Junction and Click Bank.

3.?????? Paid Reviews: You can post a review of a product, service or a company on a blog and get paid for it. However, you need to be picky about the reviews you post as you might risk losing your blog following if your post irrelevant/false reviews. You can work your way around business forums to find such opportunities or can also try websites such as ReviewMe or PayPerPost.

4.?????? Donations: Many blogs earn a lot of money just from donations of their followers. If you are providing very useful and informative content, then you can certainly ask for donations. You might be surprised by how generous your followers can be.

?5.?????? Sell Something: You can always use the conventional method of making money. Sell any product or service that is relevant to your blog. For eg. Sitcom and movie fan blogs make a lot of money by selling merchandise and other collectible items.

Do take into account that any of the methods listed above will only work if you have a decent amount of traffic on your blog. The first step of monetizing your blog is putting up original, interesting and informative content on the blog. If your blog has some substance to offer then only it can be monetized. So, make sure you use the right resources to create impactful blog content.

PFT: Pats trade for troubled Bucs CB Talib

Atlanta Falcons v Philadelphia EaglesGetty Images

Philadelphia fans are notoriously vocal, but Eagles defensive end Jason Babin said some of them crossed the line during last week?s loss to the Falcons.

Since he was rotating more with Brandon Graham, he spent more time on the sidelines than usual, and what he heard repulsed him.

?During the game there was a good section of fans chanting some of the most vile things I?ve ever heard,? Babin said, via Geoff Mosher of CSNPhilly.com. ?Not just at a football game, but in life, in general. Talking about attacking Coach [Andy Reid], talking about people?s wives and kids and chanting them. And I just thought there was no place for that in the NFL, none whatsoever.

?Just some of the foul things people were saying. Yeah, I?m gonna be protective of Coach Reid, Coach Wash and my teammates. It was upsetting that a few bad apples were chanting that kind of stuff, but what are you going to do??

Breaking a three-game losing streak would help, but Babin ? who has played for five different teams ? said what he heard was beyond the normal dissatisfied fans.

?But if I could say just one of the things they were chanting, it?s way past bad, it?s foul,? he said. ?I?ve never heard ? listen, I don?t want to even repeat what I heard, it was that bad. And I?ve got a pretty high threshold for adult jokes, to give you an idea of what they?re saying.?

Philadelphia?s crowd has a reputation for a reason, having booed Santa Claus and an injured Michael Irvin. But a segment of the population seems intent on driving that image lower and lower.

Brain cancer patient dresses as clown for treatment | Cancer Kick

Cancer has been trying to break Patricia Baker?s spirits for nine years, but it should be obvious by now that this is one fight the disease cannot win.

On Tuesday, the Clark County woman strolled down the halls of the Springfield Regional Cancer Center in floppy shoes and a rainbow wig, chatting with other patients who may have been surprised to see a clown getting treatment for brain cancer. But Baker, who has already fought off colon and breast cancer in recent years, said it was her way of cheering up other patients who are facing a similar fight.

?I almost called here and asked them if it was OK,? Baker said of the cancer center?s staff. ?And I thought, no, I?m not asking. I?m just going to do it because that?s what I?m going to do.?

Brenda Lambers, a nurse at the center, has known Baker for several years.

?To see her walking in here in a clown suit for Halloween is adorable, but not terribly surprising because that?s the way she is,? Lambers said.

Baker?s fight with the disease began almost 10 years ago when she was diagnosed with colon cancer. Her mother had died of the same disease, and a different form of cancer also claimed the life of Baker?s father. Her sister, Lorette Rayburn, also died of cancer within the last year. Initially, Baker saw the diagnoses as a death sentence, but her doctor convinced her she would live.

?He said, ?No you?re not. You?re not your mother,? ? Baker said. ?That knocked something in my brain and made me look at things a whole lot different.?

Since then, Baker said decided she would never let the disease dictate her attitude again. She said her faith in God has helped her stay strong.

?You?ve got to be happy because if you?re not happy, then you put everyone else down,? Baker said. ?And I didn?t want to put anybody down. You?ve got to deal with what you have.?

Other patients, like Betty Schmitt, of Springfield, said Baker?s visit was a bright spot in the day.

?I was in the chair here when she came over and talked to me, and I was very surprised,? Schmitt said. ?I think that?s really great.?

A positive attitude alone is not enough to beat cancer, Lambers said. But patients like Baker give Lambers hope.

?A lot of people ask me if working in oncology is depressing, and I see people going through the very worst times of their life with more dignity and grace than they ever thought they could muster,? Lambers said. ?My patients amaze me every day.?

Credit Card Companies Stop Paying Down Debt Financial Hardship

paying down debtwww.unitedfinancialrelief.com

Ever feel the credit card companies?are out to get you? Well, read on and you?ll find you?re right. Between manipulative introductory gimmicks, charging high fees and interest rates, it?s common knowledge credit card companies would like to stop you from paying down debt, and really don?t have your best interests at heart. But most people don?t know just how devious they really are. This article is a cautionary warning to prevent people from falling into the credit card company?s traps. If you already carry high credit card debt balances, it?s important that you do something about it now before it?s too late.

Simply put, swiping your credit card is the act of accumulating debt. Once you?ve done this, credit card companies have a multitude of ways of causing financial hardship; it?s important to educate yourself, thus better protecting yourself from their manipulative practices. Remember, this is a relationship where they benefit from your financial strain and they lose when start paying down debt. Below are several ways credit card companies get you further in debt and prevent you from ever getting out:

? Interest Rates:? Read your agreement with the credit card companies. They can raise your interest rates at any time for just about any reason, even if you are current with your payments, and only have to give you 15 days notice. And yes, this holds true even if you have a ?fixed rate?. This is the only industry that can change the price of something after you?ve bought it. SNEAKY!!

? Low Introductory Rate:? Beware of this gimmick! They reel you in with this so you?ll sign up and spend. They get you comfortable using the card, charging up the balance. Next thing you know, you?re sitting on a high balance with a very low interest rate making regular payments, thinking you?ll pay it down sooner than later. When the introductory rate ends, your interest goes up, and now those payments you were making start to go mostly to interest fees. Now you are stuck with a high balance and with no real way to pay it down in a reasonable amount of time. GOTCHA!!

? Minimum Monthly Payments:? Credit card companies make more than 75% of their profit on your inability to pay more than the minimum required payments each month. About a decade ago, credit card companies realized that if they reduce your minimum payments, people will think they can afford to buy more on credit. What people don?t realize, is that most of their minimum payments go to interest. Credit card companies have made it easier to get in debt, and nearly impossible to get out. Recent regulatory changes now require credit card companies to include how long it would take you to pay off your debt if you were just paying the minimums on your monthly statement. Go ahead, take look. Don?t be surprised when it says 30+ years! Feeling trapped yet?

? Two-Cycle Billing: Credit card companies that use this method are calculating your interest rate based on purchases from the last two months. So, let?s say you make a large purchase in June for $1,000. Even if you pay that off completely at the end of the month, that amount will still be used the following month to calculate your average daily balance ? thus, you will pay interest on something you already paid off. Fair? Not at all.

? Shortened or Nonexistent Grace Period:? The average grace period is roughly 22 days. But some cards offer less time, while others offer none at all. If you possess a card with no grace period, you are charged interest on a purchase as soon as you make it. YIKES!

? Fees, Fees, Fees:? Credit card companies will slam you with fees for almost any infraction. Make a payment a day late? You can expect not only to be charged a late fee, but you will see your interest rates soar as well. The difference can be massive; companies have the right to hike your rates to more than 30%! Can you say ?Loan Shark??

If you were treated this way in a relationship, at your job, or any other area in life, you would be disgusted, feel betrayed, and get as far away from it as possible, wouldn?t you? So why do more than 40 million Americans let these companies bleed them of their financial stability leaving so many in hardship?

If you are struggling with credit card debt, it?s time to get out from under the credit card company?s thumb. (AP) ? Jim Leyland is returning next year as manager of the Detroit Tigers.

The team and its manager quickly ended any remaining speculation about his status by announcing Tuesday that Leyland's contract was extended through 2013. He managed on a one-year deal this year and led the Tigers to the World Series, where they were swept by the San Francisco Giants.

"Detroit is a tremendous baseball town and I couldn't dream of a better place to manage," Leyland said in a statement. "Tigers fans and the people of Michigan have supported us so well during my time here, I can't even begin to express how much that means to me."

The team said Leyland's coaching staff also has been invited to return.

Next season will be Leyland's 22nd as a major league manager and his eighth in Detroit. He's led the Tigers to the postseason three times and the World Series twice.

The 67-year-old Leyland leads all active managers with 1,676 wins, a total that puts him 15th on the career list.

"Jim is as fine a manager as there is in baseball, he has done a fantastic job for the organization and we are thrilled to have him back managing the Tigers in 2013," general manager Dave Dombrowski said. "I have a tremendous amount of respect for Jim and his ability to lead our club on the field. I am confident that you will not find a harder working or better prepared manager in the game."

Detroit faced high expectations this year after signing slugger Prince Fielder in the offseason. By mid-September, Leyland's future seemed uncertain as the Tigers struggled to keep pace in the AL Central, but they overtook the Chicago White Sox to win the division and then beat Oakland and the New York Yankees in the American League playoffs.

By the time the World Series started, Dombrowski had indicated Leyland would be welcome back in 2013, but both the manager and GM sought to postpone any public discussion of his status until after the season.

NOTES: The Tigers exercised a $6 million option on 2B Jhonny Peralta and a $3.5 million on RHP Octavio Dotel. Each had carried a $500,000 buyout.
