Videogames under fire, Hollywood lays low after school shooting

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The multi-billion-dollar videogame industry came under scrutiny on Wednesday after Hollywood canceled, postponed or played down a slew of movies and TV shows with violent content in the wake of last week's shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.

In Washington, Senator John Rockefeller called for a national study of the impact of violent videogames on children and a review of the rating system.

Although investigators in Newtown, Connecticut, have given no motive for Friday's shooting rampage, some U.S. media have reported that the 20-year-old gunman played popular videogame "Call of Duty" - in which players conduct simulated warfare missions - in the basement of his home.

The gunman, Adam Lanza, killed himself at the scene after gunning down 20 young children, six school employees and his mother.

Rockefeller said he had long been concerned about the impact of violent games and videos on children.

"Major corporations, including the video game industry, make billions on marketing and selling violent content to children. They have a responsibility to protect our children," Rockefeller said in a statement.

The Entertainment Software Association, which represents the $78 billion U.S. videogame industry, on Wednesday offered its "heartfelt prayers and condolences" to the Newtown families.

But it said in a statement that "the search for meaningful solutions must consider the broad range of actual factors that may have contributed to this tragedy.

"Any such study needs to include the years of extensive research that has shown no connection between entertainment and real-life violence," the association said.

NEW 'CALL OF DUTY,' 'HALO' GAMES RAKE IN BILLIONS

Activision Blizzard's latest title in its "Call of Duty" franchise - "Call of Duty: Black Ops II" - hit $1 billion in sales two weeks after its launch last month.

Other popular videogames include Microsoft's "Halo 4," in which players kill evil aliens. The game racked up $220 million in global sales on its launch day in November.

Mike Hickey, an analyst at National Alliance Capital Markets, said backlashes against videogames were not rare, but he was unaware of an instance of games being pulled off store shelves in the past.

When the Columbine school shooting happened in 1999, there was a similar outcry because the two perpetrators were students who played the shooter game "Doom," Hickey told Reuters.

Executives at Hollywood movie studios and TV networks have mostly laid low this week as Americans seek answers to the Newtown slaughter, and discuss how to prevent similar gun violence.

However, content seen as sensitive has been pulled from the airwaves, including an episode of the SyFy TV series "Haven" that contained violent scenes in a high school setting, and the premiere next week of a TLC show called "Best Funeral Ever."

Discovery Channel canceled a third season of its reality series "American Guns" about a family of gun makers. Some radio stations stopped playing pop star Ke$ha's bubbly new single "Die Young" to avoid any potential offense.

Glitzy red carpet premieres for violent upcoming new movies "Jack Reacher," starring Tom Cruise, and "Django Unchained" starring Jamie Foxx, were canceled out of respect for the Newtown victims, but both movies will open in theaters as planned in the next seven days.

INSENSITIVE TODAY, OK TOMORROW?

The Parents TV Council praised the response of the entertainment industry this week, but said it shouldn't be confined to the immediate aftermath of such tragedies.

"If a television network changes its programming because of content that could be insensitive today, why would that same content be appropriate at a later time?," council president Tim Winter said in a statement.

"If producers and performers rightly question whether their industry is complicit in creating a violent media culture that feeds real-life tragedies, why would there be a later time to produce and distribute more of it?," Winter added.

Most major Hollywood stars have remained silent about the potential influence of violent movies on U.S. society. But "Django Unchained" star Foxx was quoted as saying the movie industry should not shirk its responsibility.

"We cannot turn our back and say that violence in films or anything that we do doesn't have a sort of influence," Foxx was quoted as saying while promoting the film in New York.

Director Quentin Tarantino called the Newtown shootings "a horrible tragedy," but in an interview with CNN on Monday he declined to link screen violence with real life events.

"This has gone back all the way down to Shakespeare's days ... when there's violence in the street, the cry becomes 'blame the playmaker.' And you know, I actually think that's a very facile argument to pin on something that's a real life tragedy," Tarantino said.

Spy Shots: new Brilliance BS6 pops up in China, in parts

The very first spy shots of the new Brilliance BS6, aka Zhunchi. Strangely each shot shows only a part of the vehicle, so we are probably looking at clay models here. The new BS6 is scheduled to be launched on the Chinese auto market in late 2013.

The current Brilliance BS6. Facelifted twice, last time was in 2010. Price starts at 112.800 yuan and ends at 249.800 yuan. Engines: 170hp 1.8 turbo and 129hp 2.0. The latter engine is very old and will disappear in the new car, likely to be replaced by a naturally aspirated 1.8.

Ford: Celts may look at Tyreke Evans

Wait, what? Like the Celtics need another guard. Then again, you never know.

Chad Ford often has a good feel for what Danny Ainge is thinking and wrote the following thoughts on Tyreke Evans. Note: this is probably a lot more speculation than rumor.

NBA - Debating the future of five trade targets - ESPN

[The Kings] should've never drafted him. At the time GM Geoff Petrie was trying to save his job and wanted a guy who could come in and play right away. A few years later, it's pretty clear that Evans peaked in his rookie year. The Kings are a mess and Evans' style of play doesn't help things, and, again, his stock is so low, I'm not sure what the value will be. One team to watch is the Celtics -- Danny Ainge loved him before the draft. I'm not sure Boston has the assets to get a deal done, but I could see the Celtics trying to make something happen.

Evans does have some star potential that he hasn't lived up to. So that makes him just the kind of guy that Danny Ainge might try to buy low on. That said, he's not exactly what this team needs right now and will likely cost some valuable chips to acquire. So take with a grain of salt.

West Texas school trustees to fire administrators

EL PASO, Texas (AP) ? An embattled West Texas school board is about to decide the futures of two administrators amid a testing scandal.

The El Paso school board meets Tuesday to vote on the dismissal of an assistant superintendent and an assistant high school principal.

The meetings comes weeks after the Texas Education Commissioner Michael Williams said the district should take harsh action to punish those involved in the high-stakes tests cheating scandal that shook the district. Last week, Williams named a new board to replace the trustees, but federal voting rights laws require the new board to get Justice Department approval.

In October, ex-superintendent Lorenzo Garcia was sentenced to more than three years in prison after pleading guilty to fraud by preventing low performing students from taking the tests.

Sun Life to sell U.S. annuity business

TORONTO (Reuters) - Sun Life Financial Inc will sell its U.S. annuity business for $1.35 billion to a firm connected to Guggenheim Partners in a deal that should reduce the exposure of the insurer's earnings to market swings and boost its cash levels.

Even so, shareholders pulled Sun Life's stock down by 2.5 percent on Monday after the Canadian company announced the deal, which will reduce its book value and core earnings.

"The financial implications are more negative than we had assumed both in terms of the book value decline and the ongoing earnings impairment," CIBC World Markets analyst Robert Sedran wrote in a research note.

Delaware Life Holdings, which is owned by Guggenheim clients and shareholders, will rename itself Delaware Life Insurance Co following the purchase. Guggenheim will provide investment management services to the new company.

New York-based Guggenheim, which has about $160 billion in assets under management, had in recent weeks emerged as the lead bidder for the Sun Life assets, outbidding at least two other parties, sources told Reuters in November.

Sun Life, Canada's No. 3 insurer, said last year it would stop selling variable annuities and individual life products in the United States to focus more on group insurance and voluntary benefits.

Variable annuities are retirement products that guarantee the investor a minimum monthly payment.

They have become a source of earnings volatility for Sun Life in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, because of low interest rates and Canadian accounting rules that force insurers to take upfront losses on products that will not come due for years.

Weak equity markets and low bond yields sent Sun Life's profit down by 87.5 percent during the second quarter of 2012 and caused losses during the third and fourth quarters of 2011.

EARNINGS HIT

The deal will cut Sun Life's profit by 22 Canadian cents per share annually, and reduce the company's book value by C$950 million ($963 million), the company said in a statement. According to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S, Sun Life was expected to earn C$2.53 per share on a net basis in 2013.

It is also expected to reduce the company's earnings sensitivity to equity markets by 50 percent and its sensitivity to interest rates by 35 percent, compared with its sensitivities as of September 30.

"This transaction represents a transformational change to the company's business and supports our strategy of improving our risk profile and reducing the volatility of earnings," Sun Life Chief Executive Dean Connor said on a conference call.

The deal will also boost Sun Life's cash position by C$1.9 billion.

Sun Life shares were down 2.5 percent at C$27.14 on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Monday afternoon.

Sedran said the earnings and book value reductions were worse than he had expected.

"Moreover, while the decline in the earnings sensitivity to market variables improves the risk-reward profile, we did not view those sensitivities as excessive to begin with," he said.

However, he said the deal will free up time and capital that would otherwise have been engaged in what is essentially a closed business, which is a positive.

Morgan Stanley & Co advised Sun Life on the transaction, which is expected to close by the end of the second quarter next year.

18 things you should know about prostate cancer | 89.3 KPCC

(Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)

Doctors review images of a prostate with cancer. Options other than radiation, chemotherapy or surgery exist - here are some questions to ask while considering the best approach to treatment.

This week, Governor Jerry Brown made headlines with the announcement that he is undergoing radiation treatment for ?localized? prostate cancer.?

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that prostate cancer is the most common cancer found in American men of all races.

Even so, there's a lot of confusion about biopsies and treatment options. So we spoke with Stuart Holden, M.D., director of Louis Warschaw Prostate Cancer Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and Mark S. Litwin, MD Chair of the Department of Urology at UCLA and compiled answers to these 18 Frequently Asked Questions about prostate cancer.

1. What is prostate cancer?

It?s a disease of? the prostate gland of the male reproductive system.

The American Cancer Society has an in-depth overview at: http://www.cancer.org/cancer/prostatecancer/overviewguide/prostate-cancer-overview-what-is-prostate-cancer

2. What is the prostate gland and what function does it play?

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland that?s located inside a man?s body between his bladder and rectum. The prostate gland contains cells that make some of the seminal fluid that nourishes and carries sperm. The urethra ? the tube that carries urine - runs through the gland?s center. That's why changes in a man?s urinary or sexual function might indicate prostate cancer.

3. Does a diagnosis of prostate cancer mean an automatic death sentence?

Not at all. Most prostate cancer is slow growing, so those afflicted with it are often more likely to die from old age or from other causes of death than from prostate cancer.

4. How common is prostate cancer in the United States?

Very common. Nationwide, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men of all races, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (CDC) http://www.cdc.gov/cancer/dcpc/data/men.htm.?

It?s estimated that 30 percent of American men ages 50 and older - or about 10 million men - have prostate cancer, says Dr. Holden.

But most men with prostate cancer are unaware they have it. That's because the?vast majority of cases are "slow-growing pussy cats that men die?with, not?of,"?says Dr. Litwin.

5. How many U.S. men die each year of prostate cancer??

The disease ranks second to lung cancer as the leading cause of cancer deaths among men in the U.S., the CDC reports.

While that sounds ominous, the CDC puts the actual number of U.S. deaths from prostate cancer at about 28,000 a year. Drs. Holden and Litwin say when compared to the millions who are believed to be living with the disease, the death rate is proportionately very small.

?The risk of death from prostate cancer for the average Joe is extraordinarily low,? Dr. Litwin says.

6. What are some typical symptoms?

They include blood in a man?s urine or semen; problems with urinary function including weak urine flow; and difficulty with starting or holding back urination.

The cancer can also show symptoms through problems with sexual function that include difficulty getting an erection and painful ejaculation.

But for most men, prostate cancer is a silent disease. The most typical indicators include abnormal readings on PSA blood tests, which measure the protein produced by the prostate gland.

Another way doctors detect prostate cancer is by feeling a nodule or lump in the prostate during a digital rectal exam.

The?Prostate Cancer Foundation provides an overview of symptoms at: http://www.pcf.org/site/c.leJRIROrEpH/b.5802031/k.6CE8/Prostate_Cancer_Symptoms.htm

7. Does a high PSA blood test or lump on my prostate mean I have prostate cancer??

No. All it means is that there is a suspicion of prostate cancer. A biopsy is required before you can determine that cancer is present.

The CDC offers this information about PSA tests at http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/detection/PSA

8. Should I get a biopsy if I have an abnormal PSA reading or a lump in my prostate?

That depends. Until recently, the automatic next step was for your doctor to order a biopsy. ?

These days, however, leaders in the field are opting to first consider a patient?s age and health before ordering a biopsy. If the patient is too elderly or too sick with other illnesses for a prostate diagnosis to add value to his life, it?s more likely his doctor will to forego a biopsy.

If you don't fall into those categories, a biopsy is the recommended next step.

9. What happens during a prostate cancer biopsy?

The doctor places an ultrasound probe into the rectum, which provides an image of the prostate. Local anesthesia is injected. Then a hollow-bore needle is inserted, usually through the rectum wall, into the prostate gland.?

Typically, about a dozen samples of tissue - about the size of a one-inch length of lead from a mechanical pencil - are taken from the prostate.

?Those samples go to the pathologist who studies them under a microscope and tells us if it?s cancer or a benign growth,? Dr. Litwin says.

10. Do biopsies pose any health risks?

They can. Among the risks is blood infection because the needle must pass through the rectum.

?The rectum is not the most sterile area of the body,? says Dr. Litwin. ?For that reason we always give people antibiotics around the time of the biopsy.?

But Drs. Litwin and Holden say the risk of blood infections is minimal.

11. What if my biopsy results in a cancer diagnosis? ?

Your doctor will next consider stage and grade of the tumor. ?

The stage of a prostate tumor?refers to whether it?s confined to the prostate or has spread to other sites in the body. The confined variety of prostate cancer, also known as? ?localized? or ?early-stage? prostate cancer, is the type that Governor Jerry Brown?s office has reported.

The grade or severity of the cancer is then measured on a 10-point scale that provides a ranking known as a ?Gleason?s score.? The higher the Gleason?s score, the more severe the cancer.

12. Do the stage and grade of a prostate tumor affect treatment decisions?

Yes. They have huge implications on decisions that a patient and doctor will make together regarding which treatment method is best.

13. What are the treatment options?

There are three main options: active surveillance, surgery, and radiation. ??

14. What is ?active surveillance? and what does it entail?

This treatment option involves the patient foregoing ? at least initially - surgery or radiation for ?active? surveillance of the tumor. This is a fairly new treatment approach recommended for those with slow-growing tumors as a way to avoid surgery and radiation.

Dr. Holden says those who opt for ?active surveillance? will undergo regular PSA blood tests, digital rectal exams and repeated biopsies.

Those diagnosed with prostate cancer can now sign onto the world's first online medical data base for men with the disease.?The interactive data base allows them to track progression of the disease before seeking aggressive treatments.

15. What does prostate cancer surgery involve?

Today, prostate surgery typically involves removal of the entire prostate gland. But new imaging methods under study at UCLA?might change that.

The new technology combines ultrasound and MRI imaging that researchers say may allow doctors to see, then target suspicious growths on a patient?s prostate gland for more accurate biopsies. By contrast, in prostate biopsies doctors can?t see the tumor.

The American Cancer Society offers more information: http://www.cancer.org/cancer/prostatecancer/overviewguide/prostate-cancer-overview-treating-surgery

16. What does radiation treatment involve?

Dr. Holden says doctors often recommend external beam radiation for early-stage, localized prostate cancer. The treatments usually last between six to seven weeks, which each treatment session lasting about five minutes.

?Basically, it?s completely external and like having your picture taken,? says Dr. Holden.

Advances in radiation treatment, which allows for focused beams to target the just the prostate, reduce the risks and have made it more effective.

The American Cancer Society offers more about radiation treatment for prostate cancer:?http://www.cancer.org/cancer/prostatecancer/detailedguide/prostate-cancer-treating-radiation-therapy?

17. What are the potential side effects of surgery or radiation treatment?

Surgery and radiation pose serious side effects, most notably incontinence and impotence. An individual?s likelihood of suffering either or both depends on age, health and existing sexual functionality before surgery.

Dr. Holden says the incidence of sexual dysfunction is about equal with both treatments.?? ?Roughly 50 percent of men with either treatment retain sexual function, assuming they had good sexual function to begin with,? he says.

Surgery, by contrast, initially poses more urinary tract problems than radiation, he says.?? ?However, some of the men develop more urinary dysfunction eight or 10 years after radiation treatment,?Dr. Holden says. ?So over the long run, radiation catches up.?

18. What?s new in prostate cancer research?

The Prostate Cancer Foundation offers?a list of advances in prostate cancer research.

Improved techniques may help recovery and prevent incidents of missing drivers with dementia

Dec. 14, 2012 ? A new study focusing on how people with dementia become lost while driving, how missing drivers are found, and the role of public notification systems like Silver Alert in these discoveries suggests techniques that may help recover drivers with dementia and prevent potentially harmful incidents.

The study was led by principal investigator Meredeth A. Rowe, RN, PhD, FGSA, FAAN, professor and endowed chair at the University of South Florida College of Nursing. The findings were published online last month in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society: Missing Drivers with Dementia: Antecedents and Recovery.

Based on the study results, the research team reported several recommendations to help guide local policies and training for Silver Alert-type programs that broadcast information about missing seniors with Alzheimer's disease, dementia or other cognitive deficits, including:

- Rapid, direct notification of law enforcement agencies as well as equipping officers a mechanism for quickly assessing the cognitive status of drivers is critical. Law enforcement officers are more likely than citizens or family members to discover missing drivers with dementia.

- More detailed information about a missing individual, not just a description of the car being driven, may better assist law enforcement officers and citizens in rescuing lost drivers who have left their vehicles to wander on foot.

- State and federal agencies planning a Silver Alert program need to develop policies and procedures that recognize the distinct differences between those missing while driving and those lost while walking.

- Retirement from driving is the only preventive option when individuals can no longer safely operate a motor vehicle because dementia interferes with their ability to retain and use new information.

"With the baby-boomer generation getting older, the number of the people living with Alzheimer's disease is on the rise," Dr. Rowe said. "Most Americans depend on driving their own car to meet their transportation needs, even for the most basic needs such as food. It will be critical to identify other means of transportation for people with dementia (PWD) to facilitate driving retirement. This strategy will be the most effective intervention to reduce and prevent incidents of missing PWDs. Strategies commonly recommended, such a hiding the car keys, are potentially protective only in a small number of cases."

According to Alzheimer's Association, 5.4 million Americans live with Alzheimer's disease, including 800,000 who live alone. One in eight older Americans lives with the memory-robbing disease, including 450,000 Floridians age 65 or older. These statistics highlight the need to find more effective ways to search for missing drivers with dementia and reduce missing incidents.

Dr. Rowe and her colleagues analyzed 156 records from the Florida Silver Alert program for October 2008 through May 2010. These alerts are issued on digital highway signs and news broadcasts in Florida to assist law enforcement officials and the general public in identifying and safely returning cognitively impaired drivers.

The researchers found that most missing drivers were men, ages 58 to 94, who were cared for by a spouse. Most got lost on routine, caregiver-sanctioned trips to usual locations. Only 15 percent were found while driving, with most discovered in or near a parked car -- and law enforcement officers recovered the large majority of drivers with dementia.

In addition, only 40 percent were found in the county where they were reported missing, and 10 percent were found in a different state. Another 15 percent were found in dangerous situations such as stopped on railroad tracks. There was a 5 percent mortality rate in the study population, with those living alone more likely to be found dead than alive.

"While some PWDs may continue to drive safely, it is imperative that we identify individuals who will get lost, determine predictors of modifiable outcomes, and establish policies that will improve location of those individuals who get lost," said study co-author James E. Galvin, MD, MPH, professor of neurology and psychiatry New York University Langone Medical Center.

A comprehensive Silver Alert program that includes law enforcement and community education as well as rapid alerts is critical to finding missing drivers, the researchers conclude. Their findings led to recommendations for an additional study on how notifications be more effectively delivered to facilitate increased recoveries from "Good Samaritan" citizens.

The researchers emphasize that getting cognitively impaired people to retire from driving may be the single most effective measure for prevent missing incidents that may lead to injury or death.

"Important aspects of successful driving retirement include a partnership between the healthcare practitioner and caregiver to support the decision for driving retirement, the identification of

local and state programs? and assistance in finding alternative forms of transportation in the community," they report.

PST: Bradley's rise has been incredible

I was among a small group of journalists who had breakfast recently with Jurgen Klinsmann, the U.S. national team coach whose methods and player selection tendencies can sometimes lean to the less conventional. The results so far have been mostly favorable, even if the aesthetic hasn?t always risen to expectation.

Over the next week or so, we will extract one element each day of the extremely informative conversation, where Klinsmann expanded candidly on subjects ranging from Jozy Altidore to evolving player roles to Jermaine Jones to future matches and all points in between.

Today?s topic: Michael Bradley?s rise

It would be easy to examine the U.S. player pool and see someone like Geoff Cameron as making greatest progress over the past 18 months. He certainly has rocketed up in the order during Jurgen Klinsmann?s time in charge.

Other up-and-comers have gone from somewhere near the international-level starting line to full speed, too, such as Fabian Johnson, Terrence Boyd, Danny Williams or Herculez Gomez.

But is it possible that the biggest advance, considering tangible and intangible elements, has been Michael Bradley?s?

His starting point was further ahead, to be sure ? but look where the guy is today:

Bradley has clearly become the most important player in this U.S. program?s current version, an authoritative cop on the beat, the two-way man who makes the midfield go. He?s the top passer in midfield, a reliable tackler, a standard bearer in covering ground and a man who has become more tactically astute thanks to his year and a half in a league that emphasizes shape, cover and team movement, Italy?s Serie A.

Looking back over Klinsmann?s first weeks and months in charge, there were hints that the coach wanted to see how the team shaped up without the stoic midfielder who had been such a central presence under Bob Bradley, Michael?s father. After a start in Klinsmann?s debut against Mexico in August of 2011, Bradley missed starts against Costa Rica, Belgium, Honduras, Ecuador and France.

The United States lost four of those contests 1-0; the one ?W? was registered at home against Honduras by the same score.

Bradley was back in the starting lineup on No. 15, 2011, in what would become Klinsmann?s breakthrough contest, a worthy 3-2 win at Slovenia. Even then, Klinsmann started Bradley on the right of a midfield diamond rather than in the middle.

Bradley was easily the best player on the field that cold night in Eastern Europe ? and Klinsmann has not wanted him out of the starting lineup since.

The U.S. coach now says Bradley embodies exactly what he wants from every individual, the constant pursuit of individual betterment. Even more, Klinsmann sees what everyone else sees: a more balanced presence about Bradley now, a married man settled in his personal life, and one who may be freer to stand as team leader now that his father no longer is in charge.

Klinsmann also recognizes this ?new Bradley? as a product of routine cycling among team elements, roles and chemistry. Group dynamics evolve with the World Cup cycles in national teams, Klinsmann says.

source:

He also said Bradley?s case perfectly illustrates why players should perennially push themselves from personal comfort zones with their club situations. He respects the way Bradley (and Clint Dempsey, too) has smartly maneuvered through the hierarchy of Europe?s club scene, from Heerenveen to Borussia M?nchengladbach to Aston Villa (on a short loan) to Chievo and now to Roma.

Every stop became a valuable ?re-set,? Klinsmann said, another starting point. He credited both Bradley and Dempsey for recognizing the re-set and fighting like mad to rise up, not just to meet the new level but to grind their way to the top of it. To conquer it.

?They have to fight through the whole thing again,? Klinsmann said.

He mentioned how Dempsey is starting at Tottenham, never mind that less-than-perfect launch into life at White Hart Lane, the late leap into Spurs? season.

?Roma is the same way [with Bradley],? Klinsmann said. ?They have two or three guys there that are pretty much on the same level. These are all national team players from different countries.

?So this is what we need, that they carry that spirit and experience back into our camps. And then they can tell these younger guys, ?It?s not coming automatically for you. You have to work for it. You have to fight through it. Don?t settle early.? ?

Younger players can learn so much from that kind of commitment to excellence, Klinsmann said. He drew the circle back to Jozy Altidore.

?There?s a whole other level, two or three levels, waiting for Jozy.? He just need look at Bradley for the blueprint on getting there.

Anyone watching the games can see what Bradley means to the product on the field. Klinsmann sees the bigger picture ? and Bradley?s contributions outside the 90-minute windows might be equally important.

Movie Review: Hitchcock | New Raleigh

December, 14, 2012 , by Isaac Weeks

One of the worst mistakes you can make before writing a film review is to read someone else?s review for that movie. One of two things happen, usually; you either find yourself going over the top in justifying your review (good or bad), or you will end up reading a line that you like, and whether knowingly or no, steal that line in some way for your own piece.

That being said, I was flipping through the Indy the other day and saw David Fellerath?s review for Hitchcock, the new biopic on the legendary director. I stopped myself from reading it in an effort not to be influenced by it, but I was shocked to see that he had given the film one star out of four. One star? That?s the kind of grade you give to the sixth installment of a Dreamworks animated franchise!

So I find myself in the position of defending and championing this film. It?s not the greatest flick of the season, and Lord knows I had my issues with it as well, but while watching it I couldn?t help but think that this is the best option for those that find themselves dragged to the cinema with parents and grandparents, as it truly has something for everyone.

Hitchcock follows the auteur through the making of Psycho. Coming off of the critical and financial success that was North by Northwest, Hitch (Anthony Hopkins) finds himself at a crossroads, being both unable to find any scripts that peak his interest, and being offered nothing from the studios but Anne Frank bios or more spy flicks. While complaining to his personal secretary Peggy (Toni Collette), she mentions that every studio in town has turned down the opportunity to adapt a book detailing the Ed Gein case entitled Psycho. Hitchcock immediately takes up the story as a personal challenge.

While this is going on, we are also given a glimpse of his home life with his wife, Alma Reville (Helen Mirren). Alma is a renowned writer and editor, who since marrying Hitch has become accustomed to a life in the man?s shadow. The two have been together for decades now, and as with most marriages found on the big screen, they now spend most of their time trading barbs and making passive-aggressive gestures toward one another.

Alma fills this void in her life by assisting her friend Whitfield Cook (Danny Huston) with his latest attempt at catching Hitch?s eye with a story worth adapting for a film.

Hitchcock is far from perfect, but I found it to be an enjoyable night at the movies. Hopkins somehow overcomes the burden of wearing one of the worst makeup jobs I have seen since the days of direct-to-VHS to show us the tormented man who helmed Vertigo. A man overcome with sexual issues, seemingly falling in love with every actress lucky enough to star in one of his classics, we are not given a hero to root for in this depiction; instead we are given a character that has personal problems that make him seem like an actual human being.

The supporting cast is one of the biggest handicaps the film has going for it. Mirren does a fine job as Alma; not great, but fine. It is basically your standard Mirren performance, which will be overpraised but hard to criticize. The other two major female roles to be found here, however?woof! Scarlett Johansson stars as Janet Leigh, the star of Psycho and the latest blonde to find herself the object of Hitchcock?s passions. Johansson seems to believe she will do fine just by smiling continuously and speaking in a haughty dialect.

That, however, is light years better than Jessica Biel?s depiction of Vera Miles, a former Hitchcock star brought onto Psycho in a supporting role as a means of completing the terms of her contract. The fun other actresses could have had with this role, playing an actress in an adversarial relationship with a legendary auteur. Instead Biel merely acts as a cipher, grinning in her few scenes and playing the character as if she were just a wall for others to bounce lines off of.

As mentioned above, if you find yourself surrounded by older relatives over the next few weeks and feel the need to entertain them outside of the house for a couple of hours, you can definitely do worse than Hitchcock. It?s a light 90 minutes or so, with scenes that will delight those of all ages. Or you can catch Lincoln, because who hasn?t been waiting for War Horse 2?

Age not factor in immunity to viruses, researchers find

Dec. 13, 2012 ? Our immune system does not shut down with age, says a new study led by McMaster University researchers.

A study published in PLOS Pathogens today shows a specialized class of immune cells, known as T cells, can respond to virus infections in an older person with the same vigour as T cells from a young person.

"For a long time, it was thought the elderly were at a higher risk of infections because they lacked these immune cells, but that simply isn't the case," said Jonathan Bramson, the study's principal investigator. "The elderly are certainly capable of developing immunity to viruses."

Researchers at McMaster, University of Toronto and the University of Pennsylvania examined individuals, younger than 40, between 41 to 59 years of age and older than 60, infected with three different viruses, including West Nile, and found the older group demonstrated perfectly normal immune responses.

Both the number of virus-fighting T cells and the functionality of the T cells were equivalent in all three groups.

"So as we age, our bodies are still able to respond to new viruses, while keeping us immune to viruses we've been exposed to in the past," Bramson said.

He added that these results have important implications for vaccination of elderly individuals.

Currently, vaccines for the elderly aren't designed to elicit responses from these immune cells, and this might explain the lack of effective protection from the flu vaccine, he said.

Vaccines specifically designed to generate T-cell immunity may be more effective at protecting older adults, Bramson said.

The research was funded by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research and the U.S. National Institutes of Health. PLOS Pathogens is an open-access, peer-reviewed journal of the Public Library of Science.

Greenville commercial real estate firm expands management portfolio

PRESS RELEASE: Direct from NAI Earle Furman

Greenville, South Carolina (December 2012) ? NAI Earle Furman?s Property Management division recently added two new properties to its management portfolio.

?The latest additions to the company?s management group are 233 S. Pine Street in Spartanburg ? a 13,000 SF office building ? and Green Gate Office Park in Greenville.

?The management of Green Gate Office Park will commence mid-month. The park consists of eight buildings, making it one of the larger management assignments the division has been awarded this year.

??I feel honored to represent NAI Earle Furman as Property Manager for Green Gate Office Park. It?s a historical park! I look forward to enhancing what is already a wonderful workplace for current and future tenants,? stated Mandy Thompson, the Property Manager who will be managing Green Gate Office Park.

?The two recent additions have added approximately 125,000 square feet to NAI Earle Furman?s management portfolio, bringing the total number of square feet under the management of the company to over 5.1 million.

??As we close out 2012, we are incredibly pleased to add two quality properties to our growing portfolio. The 233 S. Pine Street office building is a very attractive facility that offers us the distinction of working with two of Spartanburg?s most well respected firms in The Ward Law Firm and Wells Fargo Advisors. And Green Gate Office Park is simply a fantastic opportunity for our management team as it is truly one of the most well-known and visible office properties in all of Greenville. We will take great pride in putting our stamp on both properties and are honored to be selected as the management firm of choice,? stated Bill Weede, Principal and President of the Property Management division.

?In addition to Thompson and Weede, the property management team at NAI Earle Furman includes Brent Illingworth, division Vice President; Leanne Jaskwhich, C.P.A., Chief Financial Officer; and a team of three additional property managers, two lease administrators, a property management assistant, and two maintenance technicians.

?NAI Earle Furman?s property management program employs a hands-on approach to real estate management, where formal monthly property inspections with face-to-face contact with each tenant provide the foundation of the program. At the beginning of each new assignment, the property is thoroughly evaluated so that a management program can be created that will suit the needs of the property and owner. Monthly operational reports are tailored to accommodate each property and include an executive summary page unlike any in the industry.

Israel must stop attacks on Palestinian NGOs and human rights ...

Early on Tuesday 11 December 2012, members of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) raided three Palestinian NGOs in Ramallah, seizing computers, work files and equipment and ransacking their offices in what Amnesty International says is part of a ?pattern of harassment? against campaigners in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

"This Israeli raid against the Addameer Prisoners Support and Human Rights Association, the Palestinian NGO Network, and the Union of Palestinian Women's Committees is part of a wider onslaught against Palestinian human rights and civil society organisations and their staff,? said Ann Harrison, Amnesty International?s Middle East and North Africa Deputy Program Director.

?It?s a pattern of harassment which seems designed to curtail their vital work.?

The Israeli authorities frequently restrict the movement of human rights defenders and other activists in the West Bank based on secret information, and prevent travel between the West Bank and Gaza Strip. NGOs in Gaza were also directly affected by the recent Israeli military operation there.

Amnesty International has asked the IDF for information regarding the reasons for the raid but has not yet received a response.

Amnesty International has been particularly concerned by the Israeli harassment of Palestinian human rights NGO Addameer over many months, including the military orders that ban its chair, Abdullatif Ghaith, from entering the West Bank or travelling abroad.

The Israeli authorities frequently prevent Addameer lawyers from visiting the prisoners and detainees they represent. Most disturbingly, according to his lawyer, Addameer researcher and human rights defender Ayman Nasser was tortured during the lengthy interrogation following his arrest by Israeli forces on 15 October.

?Arbitrary restrictions on movement, attacks on human rights and civil society organisations, and torture of human rights defenders can never be justified. They must end now, and those responsible must be held accountable," said Ann Harrison.

Police: Apple Maps has dangerous Australian error

(AP) ? Australian police are warning the public that errors in Apple's much-maligned mapping application are leading drivers headed to the southern city of Mildura to take a potentially "life-threatening" wrong turn into the middle of a remote state park.

Victoria state police said this week that Apple's Maps service places the city of Mildura about 70 kilometers (44 miles) away in the Murray Sunset National Park, a desert-like 5,000 square kilometer (1,900 square mile) region with scorching temperatures and virtually no mobile phone reception.

Police have been forced to rescue distressed drivers who have gotten stuck in the rural area ? some of whom were stranded for 24 hours with no food or water and have walked long distances through tough terrain to access phone reception.

"Police are extremely concerned as there is no water supply within the Park and temperatures can reach as high as 46 degrees (115 degrees Fahrenheit), making this a potentially life threatening issue," police said in a statement.

Earlier this year, Apple dropped Google Maps from its mobile operating systems in favor of its own mapping application, which has been criticized for bad directions, misplaced landmarks and missing towns. Apple CEO Tim Cook apologized for the mapping service in September and promised to improve it.

In the past 30 days, six people have been stranded after turning into the park via a dirt road the Maps application recommends, Mildura police inspector Simon Clemence said. The track eventually opens up into rough desert terrain that is only accessible to 4-wheel drives. That's where cars are getting stuck in the sand, Clemence said.

"If you're stuck out there in that you haven't prepared, you've got nothing, you could be in a fair bit of trouble," he said.

Police received no response when they tried to contact Apple, Clemence said. By Tuesday morning, a day after police first went public with the problem, it appeared Apple had tried to fix the problem; drivers coming from the southern city of Adelaide are now correctly directed by the Maps application to Mildura, Clemence said. But drivers from Melbourne are still sent into the park.

"So 50 percent of the people are safe and 50 percent of the people aren't," Clemence said with a chuckle. "So they sort of half-fixed it."

Apple did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

With temperatures this week expected to soar in the region, Clemence said it's critical the directions be corrected quickly.

"It's a pretty serious problem," Clemence said. "There's a fair amount of responsibility on Apple to get this fixed."

When you say "I prefer art" for our characters image, what do you mean? As in realistic images, anime, paintings, strictly drawings? Could you be a bit more specific on "art"?

I mostly mean paintings, but I suppose drawings could work as well. I apologize for any misunderstandings, and will try my best to clear that up right away. Thank you! :)

Thank you so much for clearing that up. :) So would anime pictures be acceptable?

Initially, I wasn't going to allow anime pictures, because I feel that they are overused. However, I know how difficult it can be to find a good painting of an Elf, so I suppose that anime pictures are fine. Only if you can't find anything else though. If you have any other suggestions/questions please say so!
