Red warnings are to be put on unhealthy foods under a traffic light labelling scheme to help shoppers to switch to healthy alternatives.
The Department of Health has persuaded supermarkets and food manufacturers to sign up to a standardised system to help tackle diet-related illnesses, including obesity, heart disease and cancer.
Adult obesity has risen by 300 per cent in Britain since 1980 and could affect half the population within 20 years.
Justin King, chief executive of Sainsbury?s, said the plan provided a ?once in a generation? opportunity to improve the nation?s health.
Red, amber and green labels will identify products that are high, medium or low in fat, saturated fat, sugar, salt and calories.

Tesco, Morrisons, Aldi and Lidl did not use it, with Tesco and Morrisons claiming that red labels would demonise some foods.
Following pressure from the Department of Health, however, all the supermarkets have agreed to the scheme, along with the major food manufacturers. The system is voluntary because the Government has ceded responsibility for food labelling to the EU.
